Janice George-Allen has specialised in the making of original stone lithographs.
Her work depicts a diverse range of subject matter - Portraits, Landscapes and City life.
"My Father Henry Bream, a freelance commercial Artist, worked from the family home.
He specialised in the "Figure" for book & magazine illustration, and exciting commercial Posters, all in large demand during the thirties through to the early fifties: this left a great impression on me."
Allen’s exploration of these themes and techniques began in 1949 at the age of thirteen, where she attained a scholarship to attend Twickenham Art School as a junior student. Since this experience her enthusiasm to learn and create has never faltered.
In the 70’s she studied Graphics and Lithography at Banbury School of Art.
"I was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn Offset Lithography. This was to become a great fascination to me, and led me to obtain a small Lithographic Hand press, working directly on to stone, printing in my Studio."
In 1988 Janice obtained an Advanced Diploma in Visual Studies from Brooke’s University Oxford, whilst exhibiting her works extensively around England, returning to Brooke’s University as an associate Fine Art student 1995/96 for two terms.
"This was a deliberate move away from my favoured medium LITHOGRAPHY. A cathartic, and enjoyable experience."
Allen now creates impressive large scale oil Paintings, a lively participation with paint and colour, to the rural and urban aspects that claim her interest.
"My interests are diverse, looking from Edgar DEGAS, Pierre BONNARD, Frank AUBACH to Edward HOPPER.
I am happy to work on large Scale Canvas, also of a more intimate size.
After a short visit to New York, I was fascinated by the Vernacular of the City, and the vitality that it contained. Part of this life I brought to canvas."
Vibrant, lively new paintings of New York, Cornwall and Newhaven at the Lansdown Studios and Gallery, 5 Lansdown Place, Lewes, BN7 2JT. Open Mon-Sat 11am-5pm, Sun 12pm-5pm.

This is my first exhibition of paintings in Lewes. I will be showing at the new Lansdown Studio and Gallery.
I prefer to work with a large format, always on canvas. My choice of subject matter is diverse. I am a relative newcomer to the South East Coast, living alongside the river Ouse, the late afternoon sun creating the obscure and the obvious elements that appeal to the colourist that I am.
New York City will always captivate me, the people, vernacular of the buildings, exuding a boundless energy that I will never tire of painting. I have to be as elastic as I can and just enjoy the use of oil paint to say what I have to say, it is greatly satisfying when this is recognised. Janice George-Allen
